Okay so i have a weird situation that i just figured out, but i want to optimize the situation so i am seeking some words of advice.

First off.. Hardware
cable modem - Motorola surfboard (sb6121) using with comcast Blast @ 50down
switch - Linksys SD208 - just bought this from a guy on craigslist couple days ago
wireless router - older Linksys router/gateway /w 4 switch ports.

So my wife and I recently moved into our first home a little over a month ago and now that the family has come and gone for a while now its time to get the network done proper. The house was rebuilt in 2012 because of a chinese drywall issue.. long story... but the previous owner was a ATT Uverse contractor. He ran fresh Cat5e from a closet in one of the upstairs closets to most every main room. So a few weeks ago i cabled the ends in the closet and tested and labled them for each room and everything works except for the fact that this cable modem only allows 1 Mac address and you have to reboot it with the device plugged in for a different one to work. If it is running and you plug in a different device to the wall it wont connect to the internet.....

My original plan was and currently is to have the cable modem and the sd208 switch in the closet upstairs and have the wireless modem/gateway downstairs in the master so theres better wifi downstairs and we will have a work PC in the master aswell... Now this was gonna work fine but when i have the modem go into the switch and then all of the main rooms are in the switch aswell.. i can only get 1 device to work. I am guessing this is because it is the 1 outside IP directly connecting. So i am not for sure if this will work properly..

Before all i had was the surfboard modem and the wireless router/gateway next to my main pc in the media room and everything i plugged into the router/gateway worked because it was on a lan from the router. Im guessing im gonna have to find a way to take the modem downstairs with the router, probably in the kitchen port since thats the only coax downstairs not being used.. and have the coax from the wall to the modem, then modem ethernet to the router/gateway, then 1 of the ports go into the wall which will come upstairs and plug into the switch, which will go out to the rest of the house. This is the only way i can think of how to make this work propperly while still having all of my own peraonal security settings and lan settings. Btw you cannot configure the SD208 Switch, it seems to be a plug and play kind of device. But it works good so far for 10 bux lol.

Just some additional information. The house is 4bdr with the master down. There are 6 outlets in the house with rj45 rj11 and coax, then there is the room with the closet that has all the coax phone and ethernet wires running to.

Any advice to clean up or organize this mess better would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
BigEric

It depends how hard it is to get the cables where you need them. You need a router of some sort between the modem and the switch. You would then place routers/AP in one of the rooms that connect back to the switch to get your wireless. A AP would in effect convert the wired port into wireless.

Of course if you are lucky you could connect the modem and router in one room and then use the cable to get back to the closet...it really depends how well the coax works in different rooms. Generally you want the modem as close to the first splitter as you can get it.

A second router or buying a modem/router combo would give you the option of running 2 wireless networks in your house also.

So far it seems that I wont be able to get exactly what i want without purchasing another router. Either way i went ahead and bit the bullet and just put the modem and router downstairs near the deep freezer in the dining side of the kitchen. The switch is still in the closet and all works well now, just gotta rebuild one of my older PC's and get a desk down there in the corner of the kitchen dining area so i can disguise the other hardware and use it as a guest PC lol.
