Power supply for a R9 290? Is the support taking me for a noob?

The Radeon R9-290 requires a PSU with 31A on the +12v rail and a 550W psu minimum
as rolli59 said lack of power would usually result in sudden shutdowns ,
Your 520W antec gamer has 40A on the +12v rail and you should get away with that PSU all though you are on the limmits
i suggest your problem may be something other than your PSU.
There is no need for an 850w PSU
600-650W will give you some headroom,
i suggest a psu from seasonic /xfx ( also made by seasonic ) or any psu from the Corsair TX.HX or AX range of psu's
