So, if I was to buy the Asus Maximus VII Hero and use Devil's Canyon I would need a BIOS update to 0609?

I doubt that there will be new stock with the BIOS 0609 in Australia. So how do I update my bios without being able to use my CPU? Note that this will be my first build so I won't have any CPU to install the new BIOS.

Do I get it onto my USB and plug it in? If so which USB port do I use?

Thanks

Probably the only way to do it, that I've found, is to buy the cheapest compatible chip possible in order to flash.

Maybe if you buy from a brick-and-mortar store they would be kind enough to charge a small amount to flash the BIOS for you.

That doesn't help me much.

I had the same problem when I purchased my board. The only way I was able to update it was buying a new bios chip with the latest version. However, I believe the mobo you have has a USB flash ability which will allows you too update it using a flash drive under 8gb in size formatted in fat32 without a cpu installed. This will only work proving you currently have a version late enough it has a .cap bios file. If the board currently has a working cpu in it, you can just install the latest version and it should be backwards compatible with the current hardware.

There is a USB BIOS flashback feature, but how do I know if it has .cap BIOS file? If it has the earliest version of BIOS (0401) does it use .cap? How do you check BIOS version if you can't access your motherboard?

Thanks.

I know that you could do it with the Maximus VI. Here is some information on the subject.

You could follow those instructions and just put the latest BIOS onto a thumb drive and let it do its work. I am surprised that the board does not come with native support for it as it has a z97 chipset.

It will not do any harm to try flashing the BIOS with the same version. It will either flash itself and you will have the same BIOS or it will do nothing and you will still be fine as it was the same thing.
