Cant access the data

When i plug in the hard drive the system recognises that a hard drive is there and its a wd 1.8tb with reg number etc. The systems unlocks. but then when you try to actually access the data it says access denied?? can it be fixed. mtcrompton@aol.com teacher

Is this an external or internal hard drive?

Is it a boot drive - with Windows on it?

Was it out of the pc? Or is this a laptop?

What do you mean by "The systems unlocks"?

Are you logged in as the pc/laptop Administrator?

Are you using Windows 8.1?

Is there a free recovery software? I have just seen 4card recovery on my laptop scan and see some pics on my hard drive but it will only recover 100 files you need to spend 59 dollars to buy the full version?
