how you convert a file back to its original format in windows xp

I was downloading parameters from a piece of equipment and saving it to my computer ,,when i went to open it i used word , now i need the original format to upload but every time i try to download it automatically makes it a word file and the equipment doesnt recognize it...

It seems like you just changed the default program.

Try to right click the file and select "Open with" -> and see if the program you want to use is listed.
