i have 2 computers, one connected my lan to a router and the other connected my wifi to same router. i am using a cat5e cable for speed of 100mbps to router. my wifi device is near the router too and offers connection up to 54mbps. i noticed that when transferring rate is very slow, about 3mbps between those 2 devices. how can i increase the transfer rate? i usually need to transfer large very files fast.

Run a cable to the second machine that's on Wifi. Wifi is generally really terrible, the trade off is that you don't have a cable. Alternatively you could upgrade to a newer wifi setup like N or AC which would increase throughput. The best option is always a cable though.

thanks for your response. i tried your solution by connecting both computers to the same router by cable. the transfer rate is still the same. do you think the router may be too slow. the transfer rate is about 2.5Mb/s, isn't it too slow since the router is a recent one

If it's that slow when both machines are on cables are you sure each machine is capable of going faster? 100mbps wired should be pulling somewhere near 10MB/s depending on what traffic you have otherwise. Assuming both machines aren't busy doing other things then both drives you would think are able to read/write at over that speed.

Have you done any trouble shooting like ping between the machines or traceroute between them to ensure there is only 1 hop? Do you happen to have another router or switch you could use, or possibly just a crossover cable? How are you transferring the files?
