I plan to get a 7850 1gb card since you don't need 2gb to play 720p
I found an xfx card on newegg for 120$ and I was wondering if I should go for that or something else

More about : 7850 720p gaming

The 7850 is fine for 720p, but 1GB will limit you, even at 720p, for future games. It depends on how long you'll use that graphics card I guess. You should running Ultra at 720p :)

I would just get the Sapphire R7 260X OC 2GB http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJOKCZI for even less after rebate. It will perform about the same as the 7850 but with more VRAM.

R7 260X is a rebranded 7790 if im not mistaken, so it will be slower than a 7850, but by a small margin.

The 7850 is a good step above the 260x, not the other way around, though I agree 2GB is probably needed.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7754/the-amd-radeon-r7-26...

15% faster in Metro
7% faster in CoH
11% faster in Bioshock Infinite
13% faster in BF4
18% faster in Crysis 3

So on average about 12.5% faster, for about the same price. But the 2GB I agree would be more important going forward than a little faster. You can get the Gigabyte 260x for $109.99 after rebate:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R7 260X 2GB Video Card ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $109.99
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

I would actually say these numbers just counts even more towards the 7850.
If this card isn't bottlenecked by it's limited vram when playing Metro Last light on High settings on a 1080p screen, it's not going to be a problem to run any game on a 720p screen for some time. And since it's even better performing i don't see why he should get a 2GB card.
We're soon entering the state where 2GB is needed for 1080p gaming, but right now even 1GB is still enough, and since he's not even gaming at 1080p the vram needs are even lower.

So would still say buy the 7850, you'll run into performance issues before you get a bottleneck on the vram.

I don't think Anand's test would have been with a 1GB 7850, I was just using that test to show the chip in the 7850 is a faster overall chip.

But like you said, games are only using around 1-1.5GB at 1080p anyway, and considering 720p pushes less than half the pixels of 1080p, 1GB should suffice for 720p for a bit, as long as AA is kept in check.
