CPU Overheating after Tower fell, please help

Last night I accidently knocked over my computer tower and it turned off when it hit the ground. I opened it up after and made sure everything looked ok, and when I turned it on everything worked fine, except it started to freeze. I've been using SpeedFan to monitor the temperature and my CPU is now getting insanely hot, up to 90C, causing it to overheat. It only does this at full load, otherwise the temp. is stable at 45C. I did notice that after it was knocked down, there was a faint burning smell comping from the area of the CPU. The fan seems to be working fine however, and I took out the processor and reapplied thermal paste which didn't seem to help at all. I've also got rid of all the dust. Am I going to need a new motherboard?

My processor is an AMD FX 4170 Quad core

The heatsink probably got dismounted/unseated. Make sure the brackets are not broken and that the heatsink is in full contact.

Earlier today I already removed the heatsink and the processor, cleaned them and applied new thermal paste, and then put them back on the motherboard. Unless I didn't install it properly, the heatsink is firmly mounted on the processor.

And your temps are still the same? What program are you using to monitor temps? Take a look at this:

Neither of those programs give accurate readings. I have an A10-5800K, very similar to yours, and they give temps like 0C or -285C and stuff like that.

Take a look at AMD Overdrive to see your temps: http://download.cnet.com/AMD-OverDrive/3000-2094_4-75783985.html

Ok, so I've installed AMD-OverDrive and it's giving me completely different numbers. my CPU cores are fluctuating between 20-30C. Below that, something labeled TMPIN1 reads 55C. TMPIN2, along with 3 and 4, are all reading 250C. I'm not sure what any of this means..

In Overdrive, it is measured in Thermal Margin. That is how far it is away from the max temp, so more is better. I think TMPIN1 is your CPU socket temp, while the 20-30C is your CPU core temp.

Check the plastic clips for mounting the CPU fan. I bet one of them cracked.

It doesn't need to break completely off either, so damage might not be apparent, But if it lost mounting pressure or has a small air bubble in it from the fall then it will overheat quickly.

Also, older versions of AMD overdrive do not use margin but actually display temps. Try downloading one or two versions older.
