I have a 2006 HP Pavillion a1514in PC that over the years has been ignored, mainly due to the fact that it was unable to keep up with the updates and new applications used.

You'll understand why if u see this. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=e...

I d like to upgrade its components to help it run at a more considerable speed so that one might be patient enough to work with it. Want to keep the costs as low as possible while making all necessary upgrades (RAM, CPU, Graphics Card, Motherboard, in that order if and only if required)

I am open to the idea of upgrading to the OS to Win 7.

Please give me the options for both Win XP and Win7.

Cheers!.

Honestly, you are best scrapping that thing and starting over. It is just too old to justify the cost to upgrade.

That thought did cross my mind. But do indulge me here. What should I be looking at?

What kind of budget, and what do you want to use the system for?

INR 15000
Internet browsing, Playing Videos/Movies (Back in 2006, I used to play NFS MW on this PC with no lags)
Good level of multitasking between the two with no lags.
That'll do! It is unable to do any of it right now!

This is your motherboard's upgrade options: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en...

You don't really have much to upgrade to, probably besides Windows 7 and a better video card.

Thanks for that link. Paints a better picture.
Now my PC does really work much. I am having to wait for almost a minute to get a response out of it. This is just working with the stuff on the hard disk.

So what kind of changes would help?
I understand that I am limited on the processor side with this motherboard and my current RAM is currently only 256MB.

Definitely upgrade your RAM to 2GB. I would reinstall Windows also.

Windows 7 will use more RAM, so I don't know how good that will be, but if you have 2GB, it should be good.

Would a couple of these do the trick? Is that the right type?

No, you need PC2-4200 RAM. That's the only type supported.
