So since gta 5 was confirmed for next gen consoles and pc yesterday I figured its time to sell my current laptop and buy a desktop. I never game and dont care about a high end pc, just something good enough to run gta 5 with good fps on at least medium settings.

Its from march 2011 so I can likely get $500 or so for it no? What desktop can I get for around $700?

I never move my laptop so a desktop is fine. Also I always watch movies on my ps3 to my tv from my external hooked up into my laptop. Thanks for any suggestions.

I honestly would try it with your laptop before you go out and build a desktop. Those specs aren't really bad at all. GPU wise, you really are not going to do much better than you already have with that kind of budget. Your GPU is about equal to an HD 6850 in desktop, which is about on par with an HD 7770/R7 250x. Desktop would look something like this.
