GTA IV is running slower than it should

Hey community,

I built a custom computer a month ago. It was a budget computer, but I felt that it would comply with older games (GTA IV for example). Whenever games auto-detect graphical settings, nearly everything is set to high or very high, YET when I actually play the game I notice a significant FPS drop.

here are my SPECS:

AMD A6-5400K APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics

3.6 GHz Performance

8.1 GB RAM

AMD Radeon HD 6670

1TB Harddrive

What I've Tried:

Overclocking (failed to handle much)
Defragging
Benchmark tests

No matter how I look at it, my computer seems "powerful" according to the recommended specs for GTA IV, yet it even lags on low settings.

Have I failed to create a fully functioning system somehow? Why does my rig appear to be failing me in this way?

Solution

Resolution is usually the thing that has the biggest impact in both image quality and performance. Still, it's much better to have playable rates at 1280x960/1280x720 then having a 1080p powerpoint...
That is one badly coded game (the PC version). I run it on a GTX 680 with an i5 2500k and get the same mediocre performance.

A radeon 6670 is by no means a powerful card. It was a mid-level card when it launched, which was two AMD generations ago.

What resolution are you using? It should produce playable frame rates, though.

What other titles did you try?

Thanks for the reply! I am on a 1920x1080p resolution.

I realize my graphics card is a baby, but I figured an older game would be able to handle it. I have tried TF2 (which due to its cartoon graphics plays well), but ARMA II doesn't play well either. ARMA II is slow on the lowest settings. Furthermore, I experience lag on games like Minecraft with high settings, which seems absolutely ridiculous considering its textures (I do know that Notch poorly designed the game -- or so I've heard). is it possible that my graphics card is potentially running inefficiently because of my power supply (430 W)?

PSU is not a problem, you wouldn't get that fault condition.
ARMA II is an awful game from a resource point of view, both cpu and gpu are hammered, and a server if you are using one.
You appear to have a bad choice in games :)
What temps are the gpu and CPU reaching, i'm asking because if the game is detecting and suggesting high settings and then you only get poor performance after a little while you could be having thermal issues causing throttling.

You cpu (because it is an APU) is also weak and will cause problems in multiplayer or cpu heavy games. Is it a discrete 6670 or built into the CPU?

Haha yeah, I realize I like playing resource heavy games. I suppose I'm learning that graphics are only part of my gaming rigs difficulties. I shouldn't be having massive thermal issues because I have thermal paste, a massive heat sink, a fan at the top and bottom of my case, and a fan within my graphics card. But, potentially the desert heat is making that much harder for my rig to manage.

My temperatures haven't spiked over 41 C for most processing activities.

My graphics card is a discrete card! I am setting my power settings to High Performance (it had been set to balanced in the past) and I'm going to try lowering the resolution!

My GPU temps while running the game go for 65C or so GPU-Z tells me.

Hey I jsut dropped my resolution from 1920x1080 down to 1270x900 (or something of that nature) and it's working like a charm. Seriously, FPS have doubled if not more. That helped out way more than I thought it would! Thank you so much for your advice and help! I love this community!
