I know this topic has already been beat to death with the million other forum posts, and I apologize but all the forum's I've read seemed to compare stock 280x's and 770's that were priced differently. My questions are mostly about Mantle or if 3GB VRAM will ever be needed for a 1080p display (I'll be gaming in 1080p).

For the past 2 days I've been having trouble choosing between the MSI Gaming R9 280x Twin Frozr 3GB or the EVGA Superclocked GTX 770 2 GB. Both of them are the same price (for me) but they both get very similar FPS in games, although the 770 gets better FPS overall. What makes this so difficult is that I don't know whether in the future I will ever make use of the 3GB VRAM if I play in 1080p. Nor if Mantle will ever become big enough to be relevant. And I also learned that NVidia GPUs will be able to utilize Mantle, so a 770 will still be able to use Mantle like a 280x, correct?

Also, the 280x MSI version on Newegg has horrible ratings due to weak fans and loud noises, but on Amazon all the reviews are great. Are they different products, or is the problem now fixed? How does the heat and noise of the 770 compare to that of the Twin Frozr 280x?

In conclusion, which one will provide the best experience in the future?

it's wise to get more VRAM because the latest-gen games with more and more detailed textures will begin to use more and more VRAM. Already, Watch Dogs @ Ultra 1080p uses at least 3GB VRAM.

Yeah I guess you're right. But do the benefits of having 3 GB VRAM instead of 2 GB outweigh the benefits of having an fps increase if I get the 770?

that's a question that only you can answer, and it will depend on what type of games you are planning on playing.

If you have insufficient VRAM, you will run into stuttering and buffering, which is much worse than having marginally lower FPS. That said, you could also consider the GTX 770 4GB.

Thanks, I've decided to go with the 280x. Now I just have to chose which one.
