Good internet, decent ping, lots of lag in game

Hey guys, recently bought a new pc with really good specs. Went to happily play some games. everything runs fine, but dota 2 lags a lot. I never had this on my old much weaker laptop. the game runs smooth as silk when playing bots (offline). i tried monitoring the ping, and its higher than expected on average, but still playable (~72), but i get random spikes where the game lags for 1 to 3 seconds. they happen several times a game (40 minutes), and this happens even when I am alone in the flat.

i got virgin fibre optics on 20Mbps, speed test shows even higher than that with 10ms ping. im connecting directly to the router using an ethernet cable, i used the same set up with my laptop.

any suggestions are much appreciated.

Regards,
Karim

Hmm, not sure if its this but i had a similar problem at stracraft 2 even thou in theory it should not happen.
For me it turned out it was the hard drive. It was set to something like "use optimal power" or "If not in use go to sleep mode after x minutes".

I changed that to always ON and since them the problem is gone.

As far as i know, this happens because when all the data from your hard drive is already in the RAM, the ram dosent need the hard drive to actually spin. that puts the hard drive into sleep mode, but as soon as the ram needs something from the hard drive, it has to wait for it to spin up, wich is where those few seconds come from.

I hope this helps.
