imtrying to understand something
Is eSata a gateway for SATA harddrives to connect to the motherboard?
like is the cable in one end for eSATA and the other a SATA?
can i conncect SATA hard drives with eSATA port or no? OR those esata have their own ESATA harddrives?

Hi

You often see esata ports on Toshiba laptops where the port can take a USB or e-sata cable

The trouble with this e-SATA cable that they do not provide power to the drive (depends on type of port & cable)

A standard sata hard disk can fit in a tray with e-sata port and optionally a usb port and a power supply port

With the correct cable sata at one end and e-sata at the other you can connect a standard bare hard drive to the PC
(buta power supply is required, many 2.5" drives can be powered by a usb port (or 2 usb ports using a Y cable)

the e-SATA port goes to the SATA controller chip on the motherboard and usually appears the same as an internal SATA hard drive.

1) If you use eSATA you should have it on BOTH ends, the Motherboard and the drive case. That not only allows for power but proper Standby.

2) I recommend USB instead (preferably USB3) as I found the eSATA cable prone to break at the end.

3) eSATA connects right to the SATA connector on the hard drive, so you would get the same speeds as connecting internally which can be over 100MB/second often on newer hard drives.

4) USB uses a SATA-to-USB converter chip which bottlenecks the transfer rate. For USB2 units it's often 32MB/second maximum. I'm not sure what it is on USB3 but it's fast enough that I recommend it instead due to the connector breakage issue I mentioned.

So, If i buy a motherboard that has eSATA ports. Then i can connect this harddrive 9http://pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd10ezex directly to the eSATA port? does the hard drive have eSATA port as well as SATA port?
