My old computer has died as the cpu is fried but i bought a sata hdd enclosure and connected it up with my old hard drive to my new computer. it showed up straight away but when i clicked the folder i wanted access to on my old hard drive it just said "you do not have access to these files" but to click confirm to gain permanent access to the files and i did but the screen was just loading for minutes then eventually i heard the noise when the usb cable is disconnected (but it wasn't) and the device disappeared. now it will not appear at all even when i remove and reconnect the usb cable. Occasionally, i will hear the usb noise again but the device will still not appear but i will see in device manager that a usb bridge is connected - this eventually disconnects after a few minutes.

This is so frustrating any help would be appreciated.

update: the new device it seems to register for a short while is usb to ata/atapi bridge
