Ok I have seen plenty of threads on various forums on this topic, but the correct answer seems unclear, especially with the circumstances surrounding my issue so I figure here would be a good place to ask.

I got an overheat error and ended up having to replace a hyper 212 evo with a Corsair H100i CPU cooler. So afterwards I was monitoring my temperatures to see if I had installed it correctly and I was getting great temps on 3 of the cores; Core 0, Core 2 and Core 3 were running at around 17-23 idle but core 1 was running idling between 28-35.

I read the forums and they told me to see if it continued during load, and the temps were between 53-58 on cores 0, 2, and 3. And core 1 was between 63-68.

I tried re applying thermal paste, and reseating the block, Made sure everything was tight. Just to be on the sure side, I ended up just taking the H100i back and exchanging it because it had a number of spots were the radiator fins were bent in heavily. so I tried the new H100i, same results. So I'm sure the cooler is fine.

I decided to call Intel, and they made me run a few tests and decided they would RMA it and send me out a new one. So I paid for the cross shipping and what not, I got the new CPU in and figured it would be different but, I got slightly different results, that were a bit worse, and now a different core was having worse temps. Now with the new CPU I recieved it's core 2 that's behaving oddly.

With the new CPU I received I'm seeing almost 20 degrees difference during idle, but a smaller but still significant difference during 100% load. I am sure that the CPU cooler is fine, and I've reapplied two different brands of thermal paste (separate tries of course) as well as trying the pre applied film that came with the H100i.

But now core 0, core 1, and core 3 are idling around 18-25 depending on the day, and core 2 is consistently idling at around 38-42. During 100% load core 0 is sometimes as much as 15 degrees cooler than core 2. Usual during load core 0 will max around 50 degrees, core 2 around 60-62 degrees, and the other two between 50-55.

I'm sure the H100i is working, and installed properly. But this is now the 2nd CPU that has done this, though this being the replacement for the one I RMA'd the results are even more extreme during idle. Almost a 15-20 degree difference, in idling temperatures, and a 10 degree difference during load....this can't be normal, or am I mistaken? Seeing as the cooler is fine, this is the 2nd CPU to be doing this, though different core, what could happening here, and what can I do to remedy it?

Thank you guys in advance for your time and consideration.

P.S. Don't let the pic mislead you, the temps usually are not that low for core 2, this is just one instance to show you significant difference in idle temps, almost DOUBLE the other core as well as during load a 10 degree difference between core 0 and core 2.

Thank you for the read. I could think that the sensor could be stuck higher than ambient but 15-20 degrees higher? Someone else told me I just got two bad applications of TIM underneath the heatspreader....
