Hey guys.

I was considering buying an R9 290. but at the moment my PSU is only 500w. Will this be enough to run it on? I didn't think it would but It's worth checking with everyone :)

If not then would I be best getting a Corsair bronze semi modular PSU or the Corsair gold fully modular PSU? There's a £20 difference, is it worth it? I'm not bothered about the efficiency, just everything else such as noise, heat etc.

Thanks, George.

Gold rated 80+ are the best you can get for the money.
BTW, whats your whole system configuration?

I can get a Corsiar 750w Gold PSU pretty cheap at the moment :)  I'm just choosing between the bronze and the gold.

Also wondering If I could run the graphics card off of my 500w PSU until I have enough money for another one, or would it be dangerous?

What model and series the corsair is from?
What power supply do you have? Brand and model? How many amps on the 12V rails?

500W might just be enough if you don't overclock the CPU or GPU, but an upgrade would be beneficial.

Corsair HX and AX are the only psus worth getting now - made by Seasonic.

750W will be an overkill..Still if you get it pretty cheap, u can go with a gold and 80+ version. ;)

Hi Georgehillier
Radeon R9-290 requires a psu with 31A on the +12v rail and a 550W psu minimum
If choosing a corsair PSU , get one from the TX ,HX or AX range of psu's , they all have high grade capacitors
Seasonic /xfx make the best quality PSU's

EDIT: i would suggest a psu around 650w for some headroom

Here's the corsair PSU I was going to get: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CP-9020055-UK-Series-Mo...

And my current PSU is this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007SU2QRK/ref=oh_de...

I was just hoping I could run it for a month. But if it'll damage components or anything then I won't risk it.

Alright then, looks like it's time to upgrade my PSU :)

I may get a 750w PSU as it's only a tiny bit more and will give me headroom for if I upgrade my CPU.

No point in risking that gpu with weak psu. Better wait for Maxwell architecture powerful cards to come out which are half as power consuming with same power output.

I'm getting an R9 290, I'm getting a new GPU now as I won't be able to afford it once at uni, and the maxwell cards will only come out after I start. I can also get a R9 290 Tri-X by sapphire very cheap at the moment. It's only £30 more than the R9 280X.

Actually that RM 750 is overpriced and not worth it.
i still recommend this:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

Power Supply: XFX 650W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£60.06 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £60.06

It will be enough for any cpu and single gpu card combo including with overclocking and headroom.
Don't run the R9 290 on your old power supply. It is not enough really.

Fair enough, but I want a modular PSU to help with cable management. At the moment I hate having all these wires that aren't being used for anything :p

The XFX 650 is a semi modular and that is enough really. You need the 24 ATX pin connector anyway for powering your motherboard so no point of having that modular. The only modular parts you really want is the Sata power cables and molex since you won't use them all.

The RM series of PSU's have low grade capacitors
This is a quality PSU with high grade japanese capacitors and has 52A on the +12v rail and will run your system fine
http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Edition-Bronze-Semi-Modular...

It doesn't seem like I can get a HX or AX PSU without spending another £50 :/  Is it really necessary to get a HX or AX PSU? Will the RM be fine for my needs?

I just don't want to spend more than I need to, hence why my PC is an AMD build :D

Sorry, I didn't realise it was semi modular, my bad :p

The only thing that concerns me is that I've never heard of XFX, is it just me who's never heard of them or are they a relatively new company?

If a few people say they're good then I'll probably go with them :)

Yeah, I'm definitely considering it, although there aren't many reviews about so I'm a bit cautious.

Do you have one of these PSUs? I'm just worried about buying from a brand I hadn't heard of
