Hello,
my brother had a laptop that he used for school, it was very nice, then, our little brother dropped it and broke the screen, so our parents bought a new, well, to put it nicely, not as good laptop. after he used that for 1 or 2 years, my parents fixed the better one, and he left it in a closet for months. there was definitely something wrong with the battery, windows 7 kept saying to replace it. I got my hands on it last week, and installed Linux Debian from a live USB, but every time i boot up the laptop, i get the usual terminal looking GRUB booter, and then it just has a blank screen. Every time i try to boot it up, this happens, i even tried leaving it be for 3 hours to no avail. sorry for the long post, any info will help, i am relatively new with Linux.
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5336-2524

Do you happen to get a command line where you can type something? If so you can type "startx" and see if the desktop environment loads.

If that doesn't work, what happens when you press the keys "CTRL + ALT + F1". Do you get a command line?

Since you are new to Linux, I would recommend starting with something a little more user friendly than Debian. I prefer Linux Mint, a lot of people prefer Ubuntu. Mint has always worked great right out of the box on everything I have installed it on.

when i say the screen is blank, i mean black, but i tel the screen is on. there is no command line, but when i force it to shut down (holding the power button until it shuts off) it shows the terminal when it boots up for 1/10 of a second then it shuts down.
