Linux is a free opensource OS. Many people like the user interface of linux and some like it because they can change it and that it is free

Yes, and here is one good place to start for desktop users:

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop

Understand that Linux describes the kernel of the operating system, the other parts, such as the graphical user interface and others, can be mixed and matched differently. These different mixes are called Linux "distributions", or "distros". Ubuntu is one of the more popular ones.

Just download an ISO file, burn it to a disk to make a bootable installation disk, and install it to a hard drive on your PC. Or you can just boot from the CD and run it from the CD before installing it to the hard drive, to see if you like it.

yes you could, use the wubi installer to pick between linux versions as well as install and dual boot without having to do all the steps manually. i personally use lubuntu, its very snappy on slower machines.

you may have to read up and install certain drivers manually if they do no get installed. its usually the wifi or lan driver and sometimes the video driver.
