Does anybody know where I can get information about the overclocking performance of the new i5 4690k processor? I'm going to get either it or the 4790k, and I'd like to know if the i7 is worth the extra money. If it does overclock to ~0.5ghz faster, then I'll get the i7, but I don't want to spend an extra $100 for hyperthreading alone. Thanks in advance!

They are essentially the same as the current processors, I've seen no evidence to support the idea that the i7 has a better overclock potential (or the opposite) or that there is any change to the choice of the i5 over the i7 for a gaming rig.

Until retail chip reviews are out I would assume that the current rule-of-thumb advice remains true.

You can try a google search, but these CPUs are brand spanking new. So the only reviews/previews you will see are going to be mostly engineering samples which are not retail chips usually.

I would give it some time for people to play around with the new CPUs before deciding which overclocks better, its not possible to tell currently.

Here is one review of the new i7:

Do you have any hard evidence to support that, or are you just basing it off of the previous i5 and i7? I want to find out if the 0.5ghz difference in base clock translates to 0.5ghz difference in overclock potential.

I've tried googling with no luck. I was just hoping that somebody here might have some more information. I guess I'll just wait a bit and check again in a couple weeks or so, thanks.

Never had an intel cpu, just changed from an amd fx-8320 which was running around at 4.6ghz with a h100i but i must say that this i5-4690k is not as easy to overclock as the amd ones. Im stress testing it at 4.2ghz @ 1.232v and its reaching 80C with prime95.
When i tired it with intel stress test then I couldnt get more then 50C so i think even if i hit 100C while im stressing with prime95 it will be safe under games and stuffs.

Anyway back to your question, you wont find anything, but get this 4690k, cause once there will be tutorials im pretty sure it will be better but for me its kinda hard after an amd platform to oc it. If you are gonna use it for gaming, i wouldnt recommend you to get an i7 cause its an i5 with hyperthreading.

Maybe around October someone will make a normal test with a retail cpu, but if you get the 4690k, you will have to buy an z97 platform motherboard which will support the 5th generation of intel cpus too so if i would be you i'd go with the 4690k or the 4790k.
