1. I purchased a USB to SATA/IDE cable since I wanted to transfer data from an old HDD(about 13 yrs) to my PC.

2. My PC is Acer Aspire x3400 which has been holding up well, Win7 64bit installed.

3. I connected the cables to the old HDD and went into Disk Management, Windows does seem to recognize old HDD but cannot read it.

4. Right clicked and changed 'Disk 0'(the old HDD) to 'Dynamic', did not make difference.

5. While googling, I found a way of changing Dynamic HDDs to Basic.. I don't know why I had to do that..ugh.
Anyways I used a program called HxD to do the exact following..
http://strangelyperfect.tv/6415/how-to-convert-a-dynamic-disk-to-basic-disk-in-windows-7/#sthash.uNCRL3NA.nhysxw0j.dpbs

6. I reboot windows and.. it won't start up.

7. I go into setup menu and it indeed does recognize the internal HDD, but cannot prompt it to boot to windows. Recovery options just displays errors, there are no drivers to read, and going to command prompt goes to x:windows/system32. I tried to go into c: but it absolutely cannot read my local disk.

8. I read that dynamic HDDs won't boot, so I accidentally converted my local HDD to dynamic? I think I haven't touched any HDD options except the old HDD. I unplugged the old one since.

9. I tried to install win7 using my bootable win7 usb, but it won't recognize my internal HDD.

10. So.. I am pretty much stuck. I read in places that plugging and unplugging the internal cables do the trick, but I assume it's more of a screwed up setup.

"Right clicked and changed 'Disk 0'(the old HDD) to 'Dynamic'"

'Disk 0' is almost always the internal HDD you boot in to Windows from, that's why it won't boot, you chose the wrong HDD when you were you messing about trying to read the old one (which was/is actually named 'Disk 1').

Thank you. I tried Option four and it seemed like it worked.. said it converted my internal HDD to basic. And according to 'list disk' it seems Online. (it was offline when it was dynamic)

I reboot and the 'Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key' message shows.

Since I cannot even boot from my bootable Win7 USB at this point(I even set up BIOS boot order, don't know why it won't read) I tried to go in to Acer eRecovery and it still displays the same error I got from last time. (the exception unknown software exception 0xc000000d))

+ An update: took a closer look at BIOS setup and noticed I had to tweak one more option.. so I managed to boot up Win7 USB setup and install Windows (this time setup was able to recognize the HDD). The installation took awfully fast despite the whole HDD being wiped clean.. aw well.. at least now I can go into Windows.

Yeah, that's probably what I did. *Sigh* I really should not touch things I don't know or do proper research before attempting anything.
