Hello,

I recently bought an 450w Power supply from XFX (Core Edition), and I wanted to upgrade my graphic card. The problem is that almost all websites say that I need a 500w Power Supply to run a R9 270 or a GTX 660. And then I read on forums, that say that I can use a 450w.

Can someone help me?

This is my current PC:
- AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
- XFX Core Edition 450w Power Supply
- Radeon 5830 1GB DDR5
- 4 GB RAM
- 1TB Hard Drive
- Motherboard Gigabyte ga-970a-ud3p

Can I run a R9 270 from Sapphire? Or a GTX 660 TI? (or something similar)

Goal: Play games :)

I would really appreciate the help!
Thank you :)

Yes you can run a R9 270 on that power supply although it is limiting if overclocking.
A R9 270 is recommended to have at least 28 amps on the power supply 12V rails and one 6 pin PCIE connector. The XFX 450W has 34 amps and has one 6+2 pin PCIE and one 6 pin PCIE connector.
THe GTX 660Ti is the same. You can run it on that power supply.
The GTX 660Ti will perform faster than the R9 270 most of the time at 1080p.

R9 270/X & GTX 660ti requires 24 Amps on the 12v rail & a 500W PSU minimum

The 500W minimum is due to the typical 500W PSU having around this much power on the 12v rail on average, so it takes into consideration the junk PSU's as well.

A good quality PSU like the XFX 450W Pro that has 34 Amps/408W on the 12v rail is perfectly acceptable for a single graphics card system with a GPU around this performance/power requirement. As it outputs most of it's advertised wattage as amps on the 12v rail.

Tier two class A - Excellent quality units, if not, as good as the Tier one class of units. For people who have a limited budget, but still want a reliable unit for the price

Thank you so much for the quick replys! :)

May I ask you something? On the price range of the R9 270 and a GTX 660 TI, is there any graphic card that is better? I wanted to play games like Watch dogs (not on ultra, i know ^^ )

Your XFX psu is a good unit.
I would expect no problem with either a R9-270 or GTX660ti.

If you have doubts, consider a GTX750ti that is more power efficient, and in the same performance ballpark.

The next step up would be the GTX 760 or R9 280. But these are recommended with 30 Amps on the 12v rail. And require 2x 6in power for the 760 & 1x 6pin & 1x 8 pin connectors for the 280. You'd be pushing it too far IMO, as you want to leave headroom. For these card you'd wan't the XFX 550W Pro that has 44 Amps on the 12v rail with 1x 6pin & 1x 8pin power connctors.

Thank you again for the super quick reply! :D

And thank you for the explanation. So, you guys would recommend a R9 270 or a GTX 660 TI?
(A stupid question, the R9 270x is too powerful for the power supply, right?)

It is doable to run a R9 270X on a XFX 450W but it is not recommended.
The GTX 660Ti will pull ahead in most games. They will be neck and neck in BF4.

Here is a benchmark to give you an idea on performance, if they're are games you prefer, you can see which is best suited: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/R9_270X_Gaming/1...

As to the R9 270 V's 270X for your power supply to run. They are the same card, just that the X version is overclocked, as you can see with the MSI R9 270X in the Techpowerup review linked. It will use a little more power, but nothing your PSU can't handle.

So.. I think it's decided! A R9 270 :)  Now I need to find a good deal/brand, I heard the Asus R9 270 is not that great.. I think I am going for Sapphire.

Thank you so much ^^
