As a part of my build I picked up a 212 evo cpu cooler and some mx4 thermal paste. The fan, of course, comes with a little paste of its own. The other day I pulled the back off my 6 year old dell laptop to clean out the fan because it seemed that the fan was always running high. it appears the CPU core is a raised portion in the middle of the whole chip. when I took the assembly off, I noticed that the thermal paste on the fan heat sink part of the assembly has basically oozed out around the core and didnt seem to be doing too much good in the way of making good contact with the cpu core. would it be a good idea to remove the old paste and add some of the stock paste from the 212 evo? or are old laptops different in some way and this wouldnt work.

Solution
Certainly. Paste wears out, dries up, or in your case it has moved on :D

Clean it with alcohol and papertowel, coffee filter, q-tips, ect. Then re-apply. Your CM paste will be fine.
