Would my motherboard be compatible with a phenom x4 955?
And does that CPU accept ddr2 ram?
I understand that am3 is backwards compatible with am2+, but will my motherboard allow the voltages the CPU needs?
I am trying to throw together an entry level gaming rig, I have a Foxconn a6vmx am2+ motherboard , i want to put that CPU into it, I have an evga gts 250 gpu I am going to put Into it. And upgrade to 4 gbs of DDR 2 ( which as far as I know is the maximum , correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not trying to play at ultra setting just medium high with most games on steam. Maybe some battlefield 3 and stuff .

The FoxconnChannel website is down so I cannot confirm BIOS compatibility. In theory it will work. I ran my 955 on an AM2+ with 2x2GB DDR2-1066.

When the site comes back up, I suggest you check the CPU support list. Not all manufacturers updated BIOS on AM2+ motherboards to accept AM3 CPUs.

So basically the motherboard's VRM cannot handle 125W CPUs. Sorry mate, no go on the 955.

I seriously would put much money into that. Whatever you can find used on ebay/craigslist for like $25 maximum. I would play it safe with a 65W Athlon x2.

Alright what CPU motherboard combo do you recommend for around 150?

Something like this is ideal:

And if I used that setup, paired with an evgA gts 250 1gb gpu, what kind of power supply would I need? I was going I buy a 500 w, jw if I could go lower

Also, this chip has integrated graphics, is there perhaps another hip with higher specs , same price, and no integrated graphics you would recommend for that motherboard?

Dame if you're extremely helpful. Now is there any other chips that would work for that motherboard that I could squeeze more performance out of at the cost of no integrated graphics? I have an evga gts 250 1 gb to cover the graphics. Do you think my gpu would bottleneck the CPU?

No worries. I have many templates I work from to make it so fast. Something like this would be a lot faster like 3-4x as powerful than GTS 250:

Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R7 260X 1GB Video Card ($69.99 @ Newegg)

Which build do you want it added to?

I think I liked the intel build a little better. It's cheaper and the performance difference is negligible IMHO. So I'm getting a gts 250 1gb from my friend for 50 bucks, u think the Radeon gpu u listed is better?

Hell yeah it's better. The GTS 250 isn't worth $50. Hell I got a GTX 280 for free recently. That's how fast these Graphics cards become obsolete. You can get a GTX 480 for about $80 used, and that was a $500 card just a few years ago.

The r7 260x will be about GTX 470-480 performance. My R7 265 gets GTX 580 performance when I overclock it a bit. Got that for $100 new in november.

Yes. The 12v rail will easily push that CPU + GPU. Neither one needs much amperage. Especially the Pentium CPU is very lean.

I wonder if I could find some of those parts used and save a few more bucks? I've never had a PC I could game on so I'm really not too picky.
