3 pin system fan and "intel management engine interface" error

HI all,

Just signed up, and thanks in advance. Getting right to it....

Just bought a new'ish pc with a Gigabyte motherboard, intel core i3 4130 CPU, and a Radeon HD card. The guy I bought it off seemed to think it didn't really need a system fan as there is lots of room, but I decided to try and use the fan from my old PC anyway, as it would surely help the with air flow. The only fan blowing air out of the case, was the PSU fan.
The old fan is 9cm and 3 pin, but that didn't stop me from being able to screw it in place (although slightly out of position) and plug it into "sysfan1" on motherboard. There are options in the BIOS for speed control, but I understand that I won't be able to control the speed, so have left it on "full speed".

Sometimes when I power on PC, it switches off after a few seconds (less than 10), then immediately comes back on again and boots successfully, and I now have an exclamation mark in device manager against "intel management engine interface" and "the device cannot start (code 10)". The fan is working OK, but wondering if I should remove the fan and either live without it, or get a modern 4-pin fan.

Many thanks for any light that can be shone.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Just double checked it by unplugging the fan and the device manager shows no problems. I am supposed to fit an 8 cm fan in there, so I am wondering if the fan is simply not supported by the motherboard. It made the pc so much noisier anyway, so thinking I won't bother with it and take it out. How essential are system fans? Is the PSU enough to pull air through it? I am monitoring cpu temps, and seem ok.

Yes, I think I will. I've already discovered the cpu fan cannot be removed for cleaning without disturbing the heat sink, unlike the fan on my old AMD which had screws for easy removal. The less dust in there, the better. While typing this I rechecked device manager and that flag is back even with the fan unplugged, so I'm still none-the-wiser about that as it seems to be intermittent. I went from a 12 year old computer with a single core 1.7 ghz processor and XP, to a 4 thread 3.4 ghz and Win 7, so lots to learn :(

If anyone knows more about this "intel management engine interface" error, I would still be interested in getting it resolved. Thanks for the reply oczdude8.
