It has to do with random impurities in the silicon. I would suggest reading about silicon doping, and how imputities affect the leakage currents in P-N junctions of transistors.

because it man made.

Basically due to imperfections on a microscopic level (the silicon doping process) that are basically unavoidable under mass production conditions.

Thanks for all the replies but are they really man-made? because if they are what is the point? it is much cheaper to mass produce chips with machines and this way they should all be the same , right ?
