I own a small computer business and am currently working on a customer's MacBook Pro (A1342) with Os X 10.6.8 . It was brought to me DOA, needing a new motherboard. The mobo installation went fine, started up flawlessly. The customer requested an upgrade to the hardware, so I have installed 8 (2x4) GB DIMMs and am currently trying to clone her current hard drive to a new SSD. This is where the trouble begins. I had planned on using the Disk Utility to accomplish this, however there are no programs in her utilities folder. After some light searching, I downloaded Stellar Disk Clone and attempted to clone to the new drive. The SSD did not show up in the "Destinations" folder, not sure why. Anyway, I'm stuck now. I would prefer to get her utilities back, or completely reinstall Os X, if possible. What should my next step be?

- With utilities missing, it seems I cannot reformat the drive. I can initialize it, but it will not appear in the directory.

If the computer didn't come with install disks, then just buy a new copy of the OS. In the UK that costs £14 (about $20).

Can I do that on the Mac in question? If it isn't obvious, I know right next to nothing about Os X. Lets say I purchased a copy of Lion 10.7 from Apple and downloaded it to the MacBook Pro. Can I copy over the currently installed drive or do I need to make a bootable media from the downloaded OS?

I was referring to the same OS as is already on the Mac (Snow Leopard), which is supplied on DVD. If you want to upgrade to a newer version you can install Mavericks for free - https://www.apple.com/uk/osx/how-to-upgrade/ (that model is supported by Mavericks).

Personally, I would first clone the existing disk to an external hard disk using SuperDuper just to be on the safe side.

I am unsure if the reinstall disk is available, but the customer is currently searching for it. I will give SuperDuper a shot, but it seems as if several important features have been removed from this Mac, including AppStore access. Thank you for you assistance, Ijack.
