My new RAM required BIOS Overcklock. Is it Safe?

Hi Guys,

I have a question with regards to the system overcklock I had to do,to run my new RAM at the max possible speed.

I bought this RAM (G-Skill 8GB Ripjaws X DDR3 2133)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0050119O0/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d4_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1PH10WJZAF34VRW5XEBX&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294

I have ASUS motherboad P7H57D-V EVO, MSI R9 290X Gaming Edition, CPU: intel core i7 870 @2.93 Ghz, and now 8 GB of RAM (2 x 4GB, this is an upgrade from 6GB Elixir modules).

To run my G-Skills at 2133 Mhz I had to change BIOS settings. I enabled D.O.C.P. and selected 2133 Mhz on RAM settings. This change recaluclated the CPU frequency to 3.03 Ghz.

I did not change the intel stock cooler so my question to you guys is: Is it safe to leave my CPU at 3.03 Ghz without replacing intel stock cooler. I noticed that the temperature inside my PC is 1 degree higher when PC is idle. This is an increase from 22 degrees to 23 degrees.

When I am playing Watch Dogs PC or Battlefield 4 the PC tempeartures reaches 33 in the first game and 29 in the second.

Could you please advise me whether this overcklock is safe on intel stock cooler?

Thank you for looking into this thread.

with the newer ram your cpu went from running at 800 stock clock speed to a 1050/1060 speed. the 3.03 speed will make the cpu run a little hotter then stock speeds. you can keep the old ram and run it at 800 speed without any issue. that put the cpu speed back to stock speed and temps.

I checked the motherboard manual and it said that the top RAM speed is 2133, but this can be done through this D.O.C.P. setting. Do you think that this might damage my PC in a long run. My gaming sessions are usually not longer than 2-4 hours.

I will be testing the new RAM over the weekend as this is when I have some spare time to spend on my PC. If the PC will not crash I will assume that this is ok.

If it does crash, do you think I need to change the RAM speed to 1866 or to 1600 Mhz?

Many thanks for quick reply.

Thanks for the tip. I will dowload this software and watch for any warnings.

If the mobo says it can run the memory in OC mode then you'll be fine for a while, just monitor the temperatures. My question is, do you really need the overclock? Try with and without the OC, you probably won't even tell the difference.

Overclocking is not safe, even if manufacturers make their components capable of this function. Many a noob have come crying to tom's hardware because they burnt their pc's and they arrogantly assume that it couldn't have possibly anything to do with them having sustained an overclock for over a year.

Do I need overcklock? Hmmm I guess I need it to have my new RAM work under 2133 Mhz. This is the only reason really. I noticed that Battlefield 4 runs slighlty better with my CPU clock being at 3.03 Ghz rather than 2.94. Maybe it works better due to the RAM, I do not know.

Anyway I understand all the risks so I decided to get this cooler, this should reduce the overheating.

Do you think that the slight recalcuation of my CPU frequency might damage PC in the loner run, even with better cooler.
I heard that i7 Lynfield 870 2.93 Ghz can be overcklocked to 4.5 Ghz. I do not need such a high overcklock. I just need a bear minimum to have RAM working at 2133 Mhz. Do you think that this is unreasonable.

As someone who clearly knows the whol OC business would you recommend anything that should be done to sustain the longetivity of the PC with my overcklocke CPU (3.03 Ghz). I bought the new cooler, I will install it when it arrives, I will also put new thermal paste.

My case is Zalaman Z9 Plus with 4 fans. Any tips would be appreciated. I do not want to burn my PC lol.
