Will Dell ram work with aftermarket motherboards?

My friends have a Dell XPS 8500 desktop that won't start up. We think the motherboard is dead, but the other parts should still be fine. If we were to buy an aftermarket motherboard that supports the specific ram speed, would be be able to use the old ram in the new mobo? Or did dell do any weird proprietary stuff where you can't use their ram in other mobos? Thanks in advance.

it will work in other boards considering it uses the same ram type(ddr1,2,3), voltage(1.5 for most) and speed(1333mhz,266, 666mhz ect). chance are dell used the cheapest ram it could find for that ram type. ive seen them come with several brands but both the same size all in the same system.
