I have had a goal of starting my own computer repair business for many years now and I finally have the means to get it started.

I do not have any formal training everything I know is self taught from working on friends and my computers and just having a lifestyle of always working with computers and researching things on my own.

I would like to expand my knowledge and also have some credentials to show potential customers when I start my business. I would like to have at least my CompTIA A+ cert from exams 220-801 and 220-802 to start with and later on get into more certifications.

I was looking at purchasing this book from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/CompTIA-Certification-Edition-220...

Would you say this is a good purchase for studying for the exams?

The publish date on the book is 2012 so I don't know if there are any newer books that would have any updated information. I'm just worried that there will not be enough newer information in the book, for instance what about windows 8.1?

Is there any newer books that might have newer information that would be a better purchase?

I really appreciate any input and I can't wait to start practicing.

Thanks, Jeff

I used the Exam Cram book like this one here: http://www.amazon.com/CompTIA-220-801-220-802-Authorize...

My source was just self taught and that book (make sure that book is for your current version of test) and I passed the two tests with ease. You can also check out http://www.professormesser.com/ for very good videos, i did not know of this site when I took A+ but the book I got for Network+ (mike meyers book) did a poor job of explaining concepts and the videos really helped out.

For a pc repair business I would recommend you either take Network + or at least read the book and watch the videos from the link above. The data encryption and authentication sections are a bit more advanced then needed for SOHO grade home/small business networking but you will understand more about networking and be able to do basic configs for dns and dhcp servers.

The A+ exam does not get into OS specific concepts really at all, it focuses more on broad concepts

The tests are 3 years apart, 2012 sounds right for the newest version of the test. Just match up the test code to the book, the 202-801/802.

The book you linked is Mike Meyers book, I did not use his book for A+ but i did use it for Net + and it was not as helpful as the Exam Cram book was. I would pick the exam cram book over the Mike Meyers one.
