I have MSI VR420 laptop. its connect to an external monitor. To days ago the display went out. The external monitor shows "no signal" nothing has changed so I assuming the video card went bad. If I am right, can the video card be replaced?

You cannot be sure, maybe its just a lead that went out. Take it to a service provider, ask him to examine the laptop and ask him how much it would cost to repair it. If its a number you're satisfied with, then have it fixed, otherwise R.I.P. laptop.

im embarrassed to ask, but what do you by a "lead that went out" Also, sorry for not mentioning it earlier, it has worked again for maybe five minutes or so, then goes blank. it doesnt work everytime i turn it on though, maybe like 3 out of ten. Would it make a difference if i tried the s-video port instead of the vga?

What he was saying, is he thinks that your display on your laptop went out, not the external monitor. He meant "LED" which are used to create screens sometimes, but not often. LCD is used a lot more.

First the graphics card cannot be changed. It simply cannot be done in laptops.

However, being you are using a laptop, do you still get images on the screen on the laptop? If yes, then the graphics card is still functioning. However the port could be bad. Try plugging another device up to your monitor and see if you can get a picture. If yes, then your monitor is likely fine, but the VGA port on your laptop is likely bad or almost bad.

Trying a different video port like an S-Video port would make a difference in this case, as it might just be the VGA port on the laptop is going bad. Hopefully that is all it is, sometimes that leads to an umber of failures. I had a laptop about 2 years ago which had the S-Video died, then VGA port, and full system failed in a few days.

No i said LEAD, as in the cable that goes from gfx card to monitor and gfx card to external plug, but its not really a cable its more like a lead since its flat and elongated.

The graphics card would be soldered into the motherboard and not have any kind of lead, cable, wire, or other connection to the external ports, because it is all connected through the motherboard.

I took apart my screen, there is two cable that connect the something under the the screen. the cable that is on my right, seemed as though it was not pushed down all the way. I pushed it down. It didnt seem to move much. When I put my screen back together and turned it on, the display did show on the external monitor. And so far, although it has only been 24 hours, it hasn't stopped working. Thank you everyone for your help. I think without it your input the outcome wouldn't have been a good one.
