Do I need a variable speed pump?

Solution

Indeed. The only thing that sets the variable speed pumps aside is that if you really don't need lots of flow, you can reduce vibration noise.

No, it is not "needed" you can always turn down the fan speed to compensate. However, a lot of pumps don't like to have voltage resistors used on them, they don't like running at lower voltages. That is why they introduced PWM pumps.

I worded my question wrong. I know I don't need it, but I am wondering how much you would recommend it over a non variable speed pump.

I know I have a PWM pump, and rarely turn its speed down. They dont really make much noise. However, if you have the cash, do it.

There's really no point in using a variable speed pump. Most people that do have one (myself included) kust set it on the top speed and leave it alone. Small pumps are quiet, so as long as you haven't jerry-rigged a marine or pool pump into your PC (which would be awesome btw) the noise shouldn't bother you. The fans will be much more noticeable, but if you use low-speed static pressure ones such as the Corsair SP120 you won't hear them either.
