My 7990 was at idle with power and temps at normal and the screen went black and the fans went louder than I've ever heard them go before. I turned the PC off for 5mins then powered back up with no joy. Windows is running, I heard the welcome tone through the speakers. I unplugged the the lead and fans instantly dropped back to normal. Plugged back in and they instantly shot back up. This happens with the other 4 ports too. I've tried another monitor, unfortunately the same happens.
Does this mean my card is dead?

I'm running it off the 4770k and MSI z8z 65gd without the card in it, after trying the card in another two of the boards PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, with no joy. I'll try another card in it, but I don't know anyone with a case that's able to house the 7990. My other PC's cases are too small too. I could try and take the motherboard out of it and stick another one in the large case to test but that is a last resort. I there a mining bot or other malicious software that can cause the card to go funny in this way. At the time this happens I was hunting for one that wouldn't rear its ugly head with and process monitor/explorer running. The not would only kick off if the mouse or keyboard hadn't been touched. This maybe a long shot, but would a wipe and reinstall of windows help? By the way, the gpu's never got above 78c and at the time of the event, they were at 38-37c. So, just to clarify, would a wipe and reinstall of windows help? The current windows is 8.1 and was freshly installed a week ago...6 days to be exact. Thanks all

I've just removed the HDD's I use for film editing, wiped the SSD os drive and inserted the XFX 7990 back in. I now have a bios display through the card. Before, the second I turned in the PC the fan was flying very loud and there was no display/signal output at all. This by no means confirms the card to be okay, however, it is a good sign I'm guessing?

I installed Windows 8 and installed CCC 14.4 drivers. After a restart all was well. I decided to run windows own index score because I knew that would push the card to see if acceleration would be stable. Halfway through the screen went black and simultaneously, the cards fans started racing. I shut it down and turned back on, but the fans instantly raced and no signal from the card was displayed. I unplugged the display lead and the fans stopped racing. I've left the card in and I'm using the onboard at the present. I am stumped. Where can I get older drivers? Actually, I'm begging to think the card has malfunctioned somewhere. Any thoughts anyone?

Unfortunately, I'm unable to test the card in another machine due its sheer size. I was only able to test the motherboard with another card, which worked fine. I guess it's just bad luck. An RMA is possible I'm guessing. The card is only 9 months old, I have the receipt and has had very low usage. Does anyone know or has had any experience returning/receiving replacement hardware from Scan?
