I've decided that I'm going to upgrade my gpu from a hd 7870 to a r9 290, I'm currently using the following hardware:
soundcard: creative soundblaster
HDD: 2TB green
CPU: 3770k i7
RAM: 16gb corsair veng
gpu: hd 7870
psu: corsair 650w gold
mobo: extreme 4 z68 asrock
fans: 7 120mm 1 140mm all LED

any advice about the gpu upgrade or psu would be great

Check this link out:

You can see that on average a 290 consumes about 215W during gaming with peaks of up to 350W, which means that a gold rated 650W supply should be sufficient for a single 290 at factory clock speeds. It won't leave you too much room to overclock though, if you want to do that you need at least a 750W psu.
