I guess I'd have to ask if you really need more CPU power or not. As far as gaming goes, you wont see huge improvements by going up to an i7. You do also need to keep compatibility in mind with Windows 8. Some people have had plenty of issues.

What I would do personally would be to upgrade the CPU. I like Windows 8 but I do things on my PC that justify a more powerful processor so I would go there.

I don't think you'd see much if any gain going from W7 to Win8 in any program? Much less a game?

Same for the CPU change unless the program was written to use more CPU processors. The difference between and i5 and i7 are real, but the question is will the game be able to use those differences. Take a look here --> http://www.diffen.com/difference/i5_vs_i7 and from it:

================
For most mainstream consumers, i5 performance is more than sufficient; they will not need the extra performance of the i7 series if their use is limited to web browsing, email, watching video and office/productivity apps. Core i7 processors have an advantage for processor-intensive applications such as video encoding and rendering, 3D modeling, high-end graphics work and gaming. While both i5 and i7 processors can be used for gaming, high-end gaming PCs still tend to use dedicated GPUs.
===========

So unless the game can use Hyperthreading you'll probably NOT see any improvement, CPU speed may be sufficient with an i5.

You might want to consider a newer video card though. However there could be a PSU ramification (even going to an i7 CPU for that matter) if more power is needed than the present PSU can provide.
