While you will not be able to max out the settings on a demanding game like BF4 or Watch Dogs, the Gigabyte GTX760 with 4GB ram should get you going very comfortably at the medium-high settings. 30FPS+ at 900p. And if you ever need more power, you could get a second one in SLI that will put you up to GTX780 standards. Card is around $289.

Do you mean 1440x900? A GTX760 will probably play on Ultra settings at 60+ FPS at that resolution, for < $250. I would expect a GTX750Ti would meet your requirements (high to ultra, no AA, probably 40+ FPS) for < $150.
The former needs a good 450W-500W PSU, and the latter will run on a 300W-350W PSU.

A GTX770 is overkill for 1440x900. Even the $140 GTX750Ti should do significantly better than your stated requirements.

I have never really been a fan of AMD's GPU's, but that is just personal opinion. I have heard the r9 280x is still a solid GPU.

r9 280x will dominate, my vote is on that. I currently have the 7970 3gb running at 1080p ultra settings on every game.

The R9 280X / HD7970 is about on par with the GTX770; accordingly it is overkill. A R9 270X / HD7870 or even R9 270 should be sufficient, for <$200.

I think its better to go with r9 280x as next gen titles many require a powerful card to run. What do you think?

Allowing that you may also upgrade your monitor at some point, the R9 280X / HD7970 / GTX770 would buy you some future-resistance. Otherwise, a "weaker" card like a HD7870 / R9 270X / GTX760 should be sufficient for some time.

Stick with 770 and you will be future proof as well. When it comes to gaming and Graphics Cards and you've budget as well go for what you can afford the max.

R9 280x is a solid performer but my bank is on 770 here. Stick with it.

Else wait for Maxwell series from nVIDIA.

Before you decide between AMD and nVidia, check the benchmarks of the [types of] games you will be playing, or of a particular company's games, to see if they favor nVidia or AMD, or have similar performance on either. For example, if you like Blizzard games, you'd want nVidia. Iirc, Tomb Raider favors AMD. The differences may be small, or may not be.

+1 with Onus comment. AMD has mantle advantage, nVIDIA has PhysicX advantage. AMD has recently introduces freesync tech compared to nVIDIA's g-sync. Comparison goes on!
