I recently upgraded to an MSI r9 290 from my existing video card (HIS HD 5850). I've been experiencing some issues with random freeze-ups while playing games and, once, while starting windows initially. The picture freezes up and the sound loops for awhile before going silent. The picture stays frozen. I'm unable to ctrl+alt+del, and need to hard reset.

  • - I tried different drivers (beta 14.6, newest 14.4 and older 13.12) from AMD, but have had no luck.
    - The problem only started after I installed the new video card.
    - I put my old video card back in, and the problem has gone away (haven't had a freeze up yet).
    - I've run benchmark tests and have normal GPU and CPU temperatures (for both cards).

Have a few questions (full system specs below):

1. My power supply is rated @ 850 W (Corsair TX 850W), but is 4 years old. Since the new video card takes more power, could a faulty power supply be to blamed?
2. Any way to test the power supply, without getting a new power supply?
3. Anything else I can look at? I tried getting memtest to run, but couldn't get my PC to boot from the USB. Windows memtest found nothing.

Thanks!

The power likely isn't an issue because while loading windows/sitting at the desktop the GPU isn't using much power. Sounds like you got a card that was abused by a miner and he was trying to get rid of it. I also bought a card that was used for mining (290x, paid $275 for it) but it works flawlessly. The guy I bought it from posted a video showing it booted up fine etc. before he shipped it.

I would say 90% of the used 390/290x's are miner cards, with most of them probably being just fine. The issue is that there is a % that have been abused. The prices on these cards are great, but there is some risk involved. I would see if you could get your $ back or a different card from the guy.

Oh sorry I replied to another thread about a used 290. I would say the card is bum anyway and RMA. Your PSU should be plenty to handle it. If it can game with the 5850 and isn't even stable with the 290, the card is probably bad.
