I currently have a netgear router and a netgear adapter. I am going to purchase a new Linksys router. Will I need to buy a new adapter as well.

Solution
In general most parts are interoperable(assuming the same operating frequency is used so 802.11b/g/n work together[2.4ghz], but A does not. The newer 802.11AC is newer and should still work with some older hardware assuming the router maker has allowed this).

Please note that some older parts had features that only worked with matching hardware such as dlinks 22 megabit wireless b cards that would only do 11 on a normal wireless b system.

Also note that if you have a wireless g(54megabit) adapter and get a newer N or AC router, you will not be able to take advantage of the extra bandwidth or dual wireless bands.

So yeah, it works for sure, but if the parts are too old, performance may not improve over the current setup.
