I have an Alienware M17xr3 laptop. It tries to reboot when my adapter is plugged in. When I run in safe mode you can see that the adapter does charge the battery. Can't play games just on the battery. I've flip-flopped my RAM sticks (4- 8gb Vengeance) into different spots to see if thet're bad, & it still has same problem. Could it be the adapter even the it does charge the battery, or maybe the motherboard? I did a diagnostic on Dell's website & the motherboard test passed. Any ideas?

I ordered an M18xR1 adapter with 330w. Should be here by tomorrow. It has more watts, but that should help the gameplay if it solves my problem. I don't think its the motherboard because everything else works fine. Is it possible that the receptacle for the adapter is going bad? I imagine it gets jostled a lot. How would I replace that?

Power connectors very typically go on laptops - and they can be a pig to fix if the power socket itself on the laptop goes, because they are usually soldered right on the motherboard. Alienware have a reputation for making their laptops very sturdy, such the problems like this occur much less frequently, however since they were bought by Dell....

Hope the new adapter solves your problem

(for me this is just another reason to build a custom desktop if at all possible...)

The adapter didn't solve problem. I think I know what is though. I went ahead and just rebooted windows 7 pro in raid0. I have 2 512 ssd's. That seems to be working fine. I spent a lot of time updating drivers and win updates. The problem that I noticed is when I downloaded my Alienware resource cd, the 2 video graphic cards listed was intel standard vga, & nvidia 460m. I tried downloading both, but the nvidia is the wrong graphic card. I have the 580m, but various websites driver support scans won't see any nvidia data at all. I had to delete the 460m because of errors stating it's not supported. I don't know why my nvidia isn't being recognized. I read many forum articles, and they seem to have no real solutions, and it seems to be a common problem after 2 yrs. usage. Tomorrow I'm going to open it up and see if anything is loose. I don't know if the video card is dead or not. I hate to have to replace it since they're fairly expensive.
