I'm based in the UK and hoping to buy components for a new pc sometime next week. The pc is needed for an e-book publishing business so is likely to be running relatively undemanding software and no games at all. It's been over a decade since I last bought components for a new pc so not at all confident that I know what I'm doing :)

The list of items I've identified so far are:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970/SB950 ATX Gigabit LAN
Memory: Kingston 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC DIMM Memory 2 x 4GB
Storage: Western Digital - 2TB Desktop SATA Hard Drive - Green
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-14 DVD/CD Writer

The questions I have are:

1. Am I right in thinking the motherboard has onboard graphics so I won't need to purchase a video card?

2. Are the items I've chosen compatible with each other/represent a reasonable build?

3. Will I need to purchase a SATA cable for the HD and/or the CD/DVD drive?

4. I've not been able to decide on a power supply or even what wattage I need. would appreciate any suggestions or advice.

5. Have I overlooked anything else?

you would be better buying an amd apu build. the onboard gfx is a lot stronger and wont cost any more than your already willing to shell out.
also pick faster ram with cas 9 or there abouts latency. ddr3 1600 is a good choice as its reasonably cheap.
sata cables come with the motherboard, typically they come with 2 only though. so you may need extra 1s if your adding more hdds/ssd
as the for psu you could get away with a decent 350w unit if you go for an apu.
maybe look at a micro atx case if you decide on the apu build. but remember you will need a micro atx motherboard.

You need minimal graphics for what you want to do.
I might suggest instead a i3-4130 which does support integrated graphics.
Any lga1150 motherboard will do.
They will usually come with two sata cables.
One for a hard drive, and one for a dvd drive.
Check the box of your motherboard if you need more. Some will have 4 sata cables.

Without a discrete graphics card, 300w will be plenty. No harm if you buy a stronger psu, they are usually not much more expensive.
Buy only a quality psu like Seasonic or xfx.

Most desktop work is single threaded; you would be wasting the 6 cores of the FX-6300.

Personally, I will not build without a SSD for the "C" drive. 120gb at least. Use a hard drive if you need bulk storage.

I'm not sure I understand what this means... jkarateking said the motherboard I had chosen doesn't include onboard graphics... so are you suggesting I need a different motherboard AND an AMD APU? Apologies for being dense but it's a long time since I last looked at pc building (over 10 years ago).

yes mate im suggesting you go with an amd a10 apu and a difrent moterboard.
an apu is a cpu with a gpu attached directly to it its an all in 1 solution and much more efficient than a cpu and motherboard that has onboard gfx in both perfomance and power consumption.
its a budget solution but thats not to say its garbage, far from it. it will outperform most intel cpus that have a similar cpu/gfx and defiantly out performs similarly priced intel offerings in the perfomance per dollar catigorys..

apu's are generally for people who dont want or need high end gfx solutions but want performance enough to do anything without costing a testicle. it may be a little slower in some things like compressing files but in pretty much everything else it outshines intel by some margin.
in fact i would say for the office its actually a better solution all round than intels offering in the same rice bracket..
it really is worth looking at and any 1 who says different is showing bias.

Thanks for the additional info, this is something of a learning curve for me. Would the following be a good combination?

CPU: AMD A10 5800K Black Edition CPU (3.8GHZ, 4MB Cache, 4 Core, HD7660D, Socket FM2, 100W

Motherboard: Asus F2A85-V PRO Motherboard (Socket FM2, AMD A85X FCH, 4x DDR3, 7x S-ATA 600, ATX, PCI Express 2.0, eSATA, USB 3.0, Dual Intelligent Processors 3 with DIGI+ Power Control
