I saw on a benchmark test for these two that the r9 280x has a slightly higher minimum framerate on most games and is $40 cheaper. But I also know that many games and people have trouble with AMD, so should I get the gtx 770 or the r9 280x (I'm gonna get a gigabyte model btw).

More about : 280x gtx 770

I got the GTX 770 because it was cheaper at the time. I love shadowplay. It records gameplay footage using almost no resources to do it. Unless you like all the Nvidia goodies I suggest the 280X because it's cheaper and the performance difference between the two cards is very much negligible.

The Gigabyte Windforce coolers are effective and not noisy; good choice there.
Otherwise, each company takes turns having driver problems, and I can't say that either has been consistently worse than the other. Where one round of drivers has problems, updates usually fix them, sometimes in days, although sometimes it takes months.
Different games may favor one company over the other. Take a look at the benchmarks for the specific [types of] games you will be playing, for such a preference. You may prefer one company's "add-ons" (e.g. PhysX) to the other.
Back to those benchmarks, if the minimums are 20 for one and 30 for the other, that's a big deal; if it's 40 vs. 60 however, it may not be (even though the percentage is the same), and you may not even notice 60 vs. 90 (same).

Before I posted this I was already leaning toward Intel. What stuff does each one have that the other one doesn't?

I thought you were comparing graphics cards (AMD vs. nVidia) not CPUs (AMD vs. Intel). Please clarify...

I'm talking about graphics cards. I have already built mu pc back in December but my didn't want to get a graphics card just yet. He's gonna let me get one now since schools out. I've got an i7 4770k from Intel and a 700 watt power supply.

Intel's GPU's are all integrated. AMD graphics destroy Intel graphics.

Ok, your PSU is good; you can run any single graphics card on it (and two of most).

My dad just told me that he wouldn't pay over $225 for a graphics card so im actually gonna go with the r9 270x, since its $200 with very good performance per dollar. :(

Go with the ASUS 270X As it has a Wonderful 30,99$- promo
And maybe you could overclock it to get better performance if you want

I'm not gonna overclock it cause that will make it break sooner and the computer before I had this one made last December was an XP from 2005. I think he'll make me wait another 8 years to get me another pc OR even let me upgrade it :( .
