Hi I have a G3420 and a hd 6870 1gb gpu and would like to know what real increase would I see with an i5? If the fps only rise a little I would want to save my 140 rather than spending on an i5 for a small increase. What the frame rate go up by a lot? Thank you

Solution
It depends.....
If your game, for example is bf4 and you are single player, not much. If multiplayer a lot.

One way to test how sensitive your games are to cpu power is to REDUCE the cpu power and see how it affects things.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
set to 70% and see how you do.
Some games can use many cores like FSX. Most can only use one or two.
In general, I think an i5 is about the best. But, we all have a budget.
And... if you do not already have a Z87 or Z97 based motherboard, a "K" will not be able to be overclocked.

I ran my gaming build with a G2030 for quite some time before I upgraded to a 2500k, so I've been in a similar situation.

Like geofelt said, it depends on which game you play. In my build for example, Bioshock Infinite had a meaningless improvement, but Splinter Cell: Blacklist was unplayable on the G2030. Certain games are optimised for multi-core processors whilst others run just fine on a dual-core.

If you are looking to buy a 4670k, then your motherboard should have a Z87 or Z97 chipset, as these will allow you to overclock the processor. Otherwise, the premium you pay for a "k" series processor is a waste of money.
