Hi

Background: I have an Alienware X51 R1, running on I5 proccessor and GTX555 with 8gbram.
The issue occured recently, and my com has been capable of playing the game before.

Problem:

Last month, my com started having BSOD, so I cleaned the computer interior, updated all drivers and did all the malware/spyware checks. By doing the above, the BSOD stopped. However now 2 issues have happened. And i believe they might be inter-related

1) When I play Assassins Creed 4, within 5mins of loading the game, the game will hang and alt-tab out to the desktop. I can still hear the sound from the game, but I cant alt-tab/ click back into the game. When it alt-tabs, I THINK the computer refreshes?? Cause at the bottom of the screen, a line stating my resolution appears, similar to what appears when i first turn my computer on.

So I tried Trine 2, the game will hang/stutter. But I am able to continue playing by alt-tabing out and then alt-tabing in.

In both cases, the 'nvidia kernel mode driver has stopped responding and has recovered' did not pop up, which leads me to error 2

2) So i decided to try a third game for the heck of it, Tropico 4. So what happens is that it just crashes, with the 'nvidia kernel mode driver has stopped responding and has recovered' popping up,

Solutions I have tried:

1) Turning off Vsync, in the games as well as in Nvidia Control
2) Setting Power Management Mode in Nvidia Control to Max Performance
3) Underclocking GPU
4) Updating drivers to latest , 337.88
5) Tried downgrading drivers to 335.23 and 332.21
6) Tried a different monitor
7) Malware Checks
8) Following this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946, increasing GPU processing time
9) Lowering graphics to minimum
10) Turning on Game Booster while playing
11) Closing Avira, and other anti-virus programs while playing

I am guessing that the nVidia kernal mode driver failure is causing all my problems while gaming.
Having said that, the kernel mode driver just crashed as I am typing this.

Hope help can be found =).

Thanks
An Extremely Frustruated Gamer

Solution
Hi, I Have found a fix for it!!!!!!

This worked for me, and for those still searching for a solution , hopefully this works for you.

I used MSI afterburner and not only underclocked, but also increased my fan speed using the user defined option.

I have not had any issues for the past 3 days.

Good luck to all!

Roll back to 412.22 if you can, if not go to the latest version.

You might want to stress test your GPU with Furmark for around 30 minutes to see if it's failing.

Hi,

sorry for the absence.

I have rolled back my driver and also updated to the latest driver to no avail. ( as suggested by the moomootv )
I have also tested my GPU with 3DMark11, and it hangs at the graphics test.

Meanwhile,
- I have restored my X51 to factory default settings using Alienrespawn, and it does not solve the problem

- I have tried starting games with the integrated card, but the game still crashes. So does this mean that its a software issue? Since both discrete and integrated card, does not work.

- I have ran memtest for 1 pass, with no errors. ( I understand that 95% of errors appear in the 1st pass. ) I will run it for a few more passes tonight.

- I have tested my hdd for errors as well.

Right now, I am trying to borrow a graphic card and try it.
Anyway for those who have this issue, it seems to be a TDR error. Which has no 1-fix solution for all.
Strangely enough anyway, I have found partial configurations to playing certain games.

Dota 2: I change screen resolution to 16bit and downclock by about 100
Other games, seem to work with downclock and windowed mode.

Hopefully, some1 can shed some light on this prob

Thanks
