Just re-installed windows 7 the other day and it popped up with around 140 important updates for windows. I did all of them successfully but there is one left that just hangs on Preparing to install. I can not install by shutting down the computer and making it install then.

More than likely the fix will simply be to not run that particular update via autoupdate. But without knowing the update can't say for sure. Copy and paste the kb number into google will give you specific information about what the update is and what may be going wrong.
