So as the title says i have black screen when i logged into my computer after an update.

thing is i've looked up ways to fix this and my first thought was it installed a new display driver and was causing problems. i went through safe mode and looked at the drivers and from what i can tell is everything is the same as it was 3 months ago with the display drivers.

I dont know what else could cause my screen to be straight black with no functions that work.
ive tried ctl-alt-del and cant do anything there except sign out. I'm sure you guys will have an answer for me, its very much appreciated.

Try to do a system restore, to point before Win Update, it should work normally then.
Also after System Restore point, disable auto installation of Drivers in Win8.
That would probably spare most hassle, otherwise if you want to try out stuff, and don't do a system restore.

If you want to check stuff, then I think the cause of it, is the driver and Windows 8 auto driver installation.
Then do clean install of display/GPU drivers (you never un-install drivers, if not changing card), just download latest display driver in safe mode /w networking, clean/repair your registry, Disable Windows auto-installation of drivers in Win8, and install new display driver /w advanced option, and check the option to do clean install.

If that won't work, there are to many other options, and I think the System Restore Point should work.

(for repair registry, download program called CCleaner)

I just mentioned to disable the >drivers< auto installing in Windows.
Not whole Windows updates, Windows 8 tries to install drivers such as display driver automaticlty, when it sees driver is not installed. It is helpful sometimes, but sometimes it can be problematic, since it can cause error, if the driver is already installed.

So basically you just needed to disable the driver auto-installation option, not Windows Update.
So you should still get updates for your Windows.

I have gone through every possible scenario detailed above and in 30 other forum posts and I still have the same problem and at my wit's end. I refuse to reinstall the OS from scratch. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad S1 Yoga and I get the black screen and active mouse pointer. I've installed 6 different versions of the Intel HD graphics drivers, both OEM and native Intel versions. I don't know what my problem is, and I've heard absolutely nobody say what I'm about to YET, but I can still use the system because I AM ABLE TO ACCESS THE BUILT-IN ADMINISTRATOR PROFILE'S DESKTOP JUST FINE. Of course that's not ideal since there are several things I can't do there, but at least my laptop is not a brick. This is what's leading to believe that my problem is not graphics driver-related. Am I wrong? Is there some aspect of the BI admin account that is impervious to GPU driver problems. No matter what I do, once I log in with another local (admin) account, I get the black screen and can back out of it using ctrl+alt+del and switching to my back-door user profile. NUTS!!!! I've even created a fresh local account (also admin) and get the same black screen effect.

I've even gone so far as to remove the g-drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU - formerly known as Drive Sweeper), of course following the same basic principles detailed here (disable driver auto-update in win, delete g-drivers, reboot, reinstall fresh g-drivers, reboot, enable win-driver auto-update). So frustrated

What can this be? Please help!!!!!!
