Severe CPU spikes when playing games

So lately I've noticed my CPU has been spiking a lot during games, even games that I can max at 60FPS such as League Of Legends or Borderlands 2. I can be playing at a really steady FPS when suddenly it will drop to around 1/4 of what it was. If I tab out to look at the CPU usage there is a huge block where every core has spiked from being about half usage to full. I don't have any form of recording software open and I usually close most things down before I play games to make sure nothing can use the majority of the usage.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

*EDIT*
When I say spiking a lot I mean it occurs usually every 15/20 mins after the first spike has happened. usually takes about an hour or so for the first jump to happen also.

Okay, so I kept CoreTemp open while I was playing games again to see the temp when it started spiking, it was on average about 60C-70C. However when it began spiking I tabbed out to find the temp at 255C..... Which obviously can;t be right because my case would've ignited by that point, but something obviously isn't right with my CPU either.

Any ideas?
Thanks

TJ Max for my CPU is 81C and recommended is nothing over 70C. I've also enver had problems with it until now.
Anyway anything I can do?

I'll have a look tomorrow and see if it's on, it's late right now, if it is I'll post again.
Also I just find it strange how it's suddenly started doing it out of nowhere

Okay, I checked the cooler and heatsink, not much dust and it was all in place, removed what dust I could, still getting the spikes.
