for the past couple of months now, after about 10-15 minutes of playing a game such as skyrim or farcry my screen will go black and a white box pops up saying monitor has gone to sleep. then i wait a little while longer and when it looks for things to connections it says no signal for all things. to fix the problem, i have to reboot my computer manually. This only happens when im playing games, never when surfing the web. also, for some reason it never happens while im playing assassins creed 4.

my graphics card is an nvidia geforce gt 220 and when surfing the net it runs at about 70 degrees Celsius(dont know what it is when gaming)
processor is an intel core i5 cpu
hard drive has 8 gigs of ram
i use windows 7 64 bit

edit: i ran gpuZ a bit later and now its registering about 61-65 idle not sure how much this changes things

More about : monitor falls asleep playing games

70C idle!?!? wow that is realy hot it might be overheating...
download GPUZ and run the stress test then check the temps and see if it shuts down again

It could well be the graphics card overheating; that's way too hot for idle (but would be fine when gaming). What is the brand and model of your PSU? Your card uses very little power, but it might still matter.

yeah i ran a stress test and within about a minute it hit 90c so i killed it

edit: i ran gpuZ while playing ac4 and it clocked upto 103c with the fan running at 100percent, but again ac4 seems to be the only game i can run without it going to sleep im sure skyrim or farcry go higher

what is the exact model of your card, by wich company is it?
-trying to find out what cooler you have
do you not have any case fans?

the subvendor of the card is MSI (1462)
Not sure if i have a case fan or not but during gaming, right when the monitor goes to sleep, there does seem to be alot of noise and extra fan activity than normal

not sure how dusty it is but i'l try cleaning it out with compressed air or something and see if that helps

Try keeping your pc cabinet side door open, it may be due to bad case ventilation. Are you using vga or dvi/hdmi to connect to monitor? May be your graphics card/system is set as "go to sleep" when it overheats. It may not be overheating so much with other games. Try turning down resolution and other settings in skyrim graphics menu.

i opened up the door and it worked quite well. i played both farcry and skyrim and they had no problems whatsoever. is there a way to replicate the results of removing the cabinet door without actually having it open?

probably not, its aerodinamics and physics realy -> how much air flows in/around the pc

theres a boxish part of my desk that the tower sits in and on all sides(not front or back) it has about 2 or 3 inches of room. when i took the door off, i angled the tower to the side so it was more exposed to the outside.

If your case has no fans, or only one, I'd make sure there's a front intake and a rear exhaust, to maintain flow through it. Boxing in a PC is generally not a good idea.

get some nice case fans! in your case i would suggest you swap the case *many cases lol* overheating is a known life shortner! and a good case, with good air flow and fans could highly decrease the Temp in your current case!.
you could also try cleaning out your GPU since it is a 200GTX i guess it hasnt been mended in a long time!,open the card and separate the cooling unit from the pcp then clean it out a bit with compressed air you might find some really nasty dust!

Your pc components are already in a box(pc cabinet). Any more boxes and it becomes almost suffocated. Place your cabinet in an open place with atleast 15 inches space all around, if you don't wanna open the side cabinet permanently.

so i took out my gpu and cleaned it and all that, and it turns out there was so much dust that the fan was having trouble spinning! anyway, the problems pretty much resolved now but im gonna get a new fan for extra cooling.
