I have a GTX 780 from Gigabyte, and I was thinking about reapplying the thermal paste. I have taken apart a defective GTX 780 Windforce GHz Edition before, and the GK110 is what you expect. Should I replace it? How would I replace it, should I use the pea strategy or an X or what?

Since it is a naked chip without a heatspreader I'd use the spread method with an old credit card or something and some thin paste like arctic mx-4...

I feel like the credit card method is terrible, uneven spreading and contaminates the GPU. Also, there's heatsinks on it.

clean the card with rubbing alcohol... And of course there's a heatsink on it, but the die packaging doesn't have a heatspreader so you are applying the tim straight on the die that is as straight and smooth as 'humanly possible' so you dont need a huge blob of the stuff on it just to squeeze over the sides (and you cover the whole thing)

The card method has been made obsolete by many. Have a look at liquid thermal compounds. like Coollaboratory Liquid Pro and there are some from zalman. These can be used on naked die's both cpu and gpu. If your in the UK, then overclockers.co.uk have a large selection of thermal compounds
