So im looking into getting either a i5 or a i7, But im having trouble deciding and every where I look im getting mixed answers. Im mostly going to be editing photos (photoshop, paint, etc.) Multitasking, light gaming sims 3 to be exact. And watching videos, Would I be better off with going for a i5 and save money to upgrade ram and all that or would I need the power from an i7 to handle tasks like that?

Solution
Well if you want to set a new land speed record for rendering, the i7 will serve you well. However the i5 will be a great overall CPU that would be a little bit cheaper. The i7 blossoms better with video editing, rendering; highly threaded and intensive tasking. I don't think you'd benefit much from an i7 given your current needs as you've listed them here. I'd just get with an i5 and call it a day.

Definitely get a Xeon E3 1230v3. It will fit right into even the cheapest Intel motherboards, and is basically an i7-4770 slighly underclocked. It costs nearly the same price as an i5-4670K: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116906

For your workload, this is by far the best option.

Well, you can get all that video editing and rendering and highly-threaded advantages for $10-20 more than an i5 with the Xeon. No reason for him to settle with an i5 with the Xeon costing just dollars more.

Thanks for the help guys, I forgot to mention I wasnt building I was just looking at laptops and couldnt decide but I think ill stick with an i5 for now so I can save some money. Also if anyone knows how good are Lenovo's laptops performance wise and reliability wise? I was looking at a Lenovo IdeaPad G510 touchscreen, its running an i5-4200m with 6gb of ram and a 1tb hd. Its on amazon for 530 or I was looking at some toshibas or a asus.

It is kind of a different story on laptops.

See, on desktops, the i5 is a quad core. The i3 is a dual core hyperthreaded.

On a laptop, I believe the i5 is a hyperthreaded dual core. i7s are typically quad cores.

Whatever, the i5-4200M will perform wonderfully, a lot better than the i5-4200U at least.

Lenovo is one of the best laptop makers. You will be very happy with it. That is an excellent deal.

6GB of RAM will be plenty and you will enjoy the touchscreen.

Lenovo is one of the more decent laptop brands, although in my experience the build quality of the Ideapads can be a bit iffy (of course, I also mistreat my laptops somewhat, so that's part of it). Not enough for me not to get the laptop, but it's not as solid as some others. Thinkpads on the other hand are apparently built like a brick (good). Performance wise they are pretty good. Depending on your budget, it might be worth it to stretch things to something like the y410p

Asus is also another good one, although a bit pricier sometimes
