I've been looking to upgrade my gtx 460 for a few weeks now. And I really like the price range of R9 280X. In particular by XFX.

However, I cannot for the life of me figure which is worth its price. Here are two versions side by side:
R9-280X-TDFD VS R9-280X-TDBD

The only logical concussion I can draw is that TDBD is better overclocked. Which I guess could be done with TDFD too. So are these cards different other than core clock speeds?

On the side note I want to mention that I look to upgrade to play future games like star citizen and other graphically heavy games. Would 280X suffice that at 1080p? Or should I wait for next gen GPUs?

My system:
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K
MOTHERBOARD: MSI P67A-C43
MEMORY: GeIL Enhance CORSA 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333
GPU: Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) GC Version
PSU: OCZ StealthXstream II OCZ600SXS2 600W 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC CASE: NZXT M59
STORAGE: WD Blue 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB & Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD

They are identical because they are the same base card. The only difference is the higher clock rates and voltage applied which makes it draw more power. Now that 750w requirement is completely unrealistic and while that psu isn't good it could power it, but I wouldn't trust it with either card

In general the 280x is a very good card for your goals
